These are unissued, never fitted, walnut butts for the No4 rifle. Produced to wartime contracts, mostly by H.Morris & Co, Glasgow, these butts have been in store ever since. Most are marked on the underside of the wrist either 'N 49 /I ' or 'S *' or 'S.L.', these butts are otherwise unmarked. They are all 'normal' length, that is 12 1/4" from heel to butt socket without the butt plate. These are fully finished and stained an even mid brown at the factory, they merely need the furniture to be swapped from the old butt. With very little work with some fine steel wool and the application of a coat or two of boiled linseed oil the full beauty of this fine timber can be brought out. The lower butt in the heading picture has had about 15 minutes attention. A little piece by myself on finishing military rifle woodwork may be found in the 'News desk' section of the website. See elsewhere in this section for new steel or brass butt plates for these butts. Stock No 3/23.
