These are original Safety Catches ('Catch, Bolt Locking' in Army parlance) for the SMLE, Rifle No1 MkIII & III*.

The safety catch consists of the lever with a shaft running through it and a collar which turns on a multi start thread. Then the lever is rotated to the rear the collar is prevented from turning by virtue of it being held captive in a slot cut in the side wall of the rifle body. The threads move the catch inwards towards the bolt locking it in position and preventing it from being opened, at the same time a semi circular projection on the end of the shaft contacts the cocking piece both preventing it from being released and lifting it clear of the nose of the sear.

These safety catches are serviceable and in good used condition, having been removed from service rifles. They mostly have wear to the original finish and may exhibit various small knocks and dings. See pictures for average condition. Some may be marked 'III' or have acceptance marks on them, others are unmarked.
