These are original screws and nuts for retaining the back-sight protector on the SMLE, Rifle No1 Mk III & III*.

The backsight protector 'ears' are fixed to the fore-end of the rifle so that they project either side of the backsight when the fore-end is fitted to the rifle. The 'ears' are retained in place by a countersunk machine screw which passes through the 'ears' and the bottom of the fore-end and is screwed into a 'nut'. With the rifle assembled the 'nut' appears to be a large headed screw let into the fore-end under the backsight.

Both screws and nuts are in excellent to new condition.
