Enfield P'14 & US M1917
In this section you will find spares, accessories and ancillary items for the British .303" Pattern '14 (P'14) rifle (later renamed 'Rifle No3 Mk1 and 1*) and the US M1917 Rifle - formally named "United States Rifle, cal .30, Model of 1917" . A small number of SMLE Mk3 components were used on the P'14 Rifle and these are included here also.
The P'14 was developed from the experimental Pattern 1913 rifle of .276" calibre which it was intended would replace the .303" SMLE, however the advent of the 1st World War in 1914 made this unrealistic. The P'13 rifle was somewhat hastily redesigned to take the .303" cartridge and large contracts were let to 3 manufacturers in the USA to build these to suppliment the anticipated shortage of rifles in the UK. Initial deliveries were slow to materialise and by the time they were available in sufficient numbers to be used production of the SMLE was more than adequate to cover the British and Commonwealth needs. The rifles were mostly put straight into store and were never a front line issue during the 1st World War with the exception of a few converted to sniper rifles.
The M17 was an American modification and production of the British .303-inch P14 rifle made to fire the US .30-06 cartridge. It was developed and manufactured during the period 1917–1918 to suppliment US shortages of the Springfield M1903 Rifle. Numerically, it was the main rifle used by the American Expeditionary Forces in Europe during World War I.
Both rifles were resurected and issued in large numbers to second line and Home Guard units during WW2.
Please note; The British P'14 Rifle was manufactured by Winchester, Remington-UMC and Remington Eddystone. Due to manufacturing issues, in many cases spares are not interchangeable between the 3 manufacturers! If in doubt, or if you need a spare by a specific manufacturer for a shooting rifle, please contact us before ordering and we will be pleased to advise you on interchangability and availability of spares.
