These are original SMLE, Rifle No1 MkIII & III*, Springs, Bolt Locking, Mk2.

These were approved for issue around 1940 as an alternative for the more usually seen Mk1 'Dumb-bell' spring which gave the tension to the SMLE safety catch, and which had been standard issue since 1907. The Mk1 spring was expensive to produce in terms of machining time and tempering, whereas this Mk2 alternative could be stamped out from spring steel strip quickly and cheaply, an important consideration in wartime Great Britain. These were also less likely to fracture if struck or if used in freezing weather.

These Springs are in new and unissued condition with a chemically blackened finish. Ideal for fitting to any SMLE used for practical rifle shooting, CSR shoots or when carried by a WW2 re-enactor and subject to a bit of rough handling.
