These are US 'GI', original, unissued, thongs (or pullthroughs) for .30 Cal rifles and machine guns. These are listed in the Field Manuals for use with .30" M1 Carbine, M1 Garand, Browning Automatic Rifle (BAR) and .30 Cal Browning M1919 machine gun, amongst other weapons.

They consist of a 31" waxed cord which is knotted to a brass patch loop at one end and a threaded brush attachment at the other. When not in use the 2 brass ends can be screwed together and the cord wrapped around for ease of storage.
