These are original production bore viewers (bore mirrors) for .50" Browning Heavy Machine Guns, probably dating from WW2.

Made from stamped, sheet steel, with a dark grey phosphated finish, these bore viewers incorporate a mirror set at 45 degrees to the axis of the bore. To use them the top cover of the gun is raised and the breech block pulled back. The bore viewer is then inserted into the chamber enabling the interior of the barrel to be viewed by looking through the aperture in the body of the viewer which is now at 90 degrees to the line of the barrel. The bore can now clearly be seen reflected in the mirror without the need to remove the barrel from the gun or strip the breech block from the body of the gun or the gun from its mounting.

Of US manufacture, the majority are marked with a stamped logo on the rear face of the viewer which reads 'C. COWLES & CO. NEW HAVEN CT.' set in a cartouche. Some are unmarked. The viewers are in good used condition (see pictures). All have good mirrors, some have very minor rust spots on the surface of the casing.
