These are original, new and unissued, 'Spring, Bolt Locking, Mk2', or Safety Catch Springs, for all No4 series rifles. These are the 'wartime' pattern springs as fitted to the majority of British No4 Rifles at the factories when they were made, although most North American production still fitted the original springs.

These springs are simply stamped from spring steel strip and lack the block of the Mk1 pattern which was machined from solid, although they are secured using the same screw. Although perfectly serviceable, production of these was discontinued at the end of WW2 in favour of the earlier Mk1 pattern. Rifles undergoing Factory Thorough Repair (FTR) usually had these springs replaced by Mk1 spring during the process. Despite this these springs can still be found today fitted to some in service No8 Rifles, and were certainly still found fitted to some L42A1 Sniper Rifles in the 1980's - this despite the fact that these springs should have been long out of service before these rifles were built or converted.
