These are original, British Army 'Gauges, Inspectors, Plug, Chamber, .22" SMLE'.

These are designed for the inspection of the chambers of SMLE, Rifles No2 MkIV, to ensure that the chamber and leed of the barrels are within specifications. The bolt is removed from the rifle and the gauge inserted into the chamber. There is a step at the rear end of the polished surface. If the whole gauge disappears within the chamber beyond the end on the step, then the chamber or commencement of rifling are worn beyond limits, if the gauge cannot be inserted far enough to reach the step, then the chamber or leed of the barrel are fouled or damaged and require cleaning or repair. Ideally the gauge should enter far enough to reach the step but not beyond it, indicating all is good.

The majority of these gauges are in original stores packaging and we have not opened them. The ones that are already opened bear dates from the early 1950's and are in good condition. However, as with all gauges that we sell, we cannot guarantee the condition of the gauge when opened, or that it will be fit for use in it's intended role!
