These are original British Army issue, spring steel protective covers for the foresight of the 7.62mm L1A1 SLR.

Originally these were issued as a ceremonial item to prevent the rifle foresight block snagging on clothing when performing arms drill. In the real world these were often hijacked by marksmen and shooting teams to protect the foresight when the rifle was not in use. As can be seen in the pictures the hood completely covers the foresight when fitted and the front arm ensures that the gas plug cannot be accidentally turned or released. Fitting and removal is simplicity itself, the hood slides over the protective 'ears' of the foresight block with the arm facing forward and covering the gas plug, a push down snaps the lower end of the arm either side of the barrel where it is held in place by spring tension. To remove it again just grasp the protector and pull up.

These protectors have a factory applied black painted finish and are in new and unissued condition. The packaging lables state that they were originally packed (in pairs) in May, 1974.
